This sizzle reel captures the hackathon Jibe Mobile co-hosted at its Mountain View office. Jibe used the event to showcase its multiplayer API for mobile, built on the RCS standard.

What Jibe was showing

RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is the standard that brings modern messaging features to the phone’s built-in messaging app. Jibe built a cloud communications platform on it, and its multiplayer API let developers create experiences that people could share across their phones. A hackathon put that API in front of developers and showed what it made possible, rather than just describing it.

What happened next

The initiative later paved the way for Google’s entry into the market. Google was struggling with its messaging execution and needed to level the playing field with iMessage. It committed to RCS and bought Jibe, the leading cloud communications platform, in 2015.

By embedding Jibe’s RCS technology into Android’s messaging, Google improved messaging between Android phones and iPhones. Read more about the acquisition in The Mechanics of Scale.

Part of a track record

Jibe is one of three consecutive exits to public companies in Dan Seyer’s career: Ribbit to BT in 2008, Jibe to Google in 2015, and Edgile to Wipro in 2021. In each case the acquirer was fulfilling its own vision and solving a specific problem, and clear positioning helped it see why the company mattered.
